The comfortable seat ensures that you can spend hours out on the water without any discomfort. With its adjustable fins and two rod holders, the Lost Lake Float Tube allows you to stay in one spot while still being able to cast your line accurately. This lightweight and durable float tube has everything you need for a great day of fishing, including adjustable fins, two rod holders, and a comfortable seat. Being 2 miles long, Laurie Lake is a good size for a pontoon boat.White River Fly Shop’s Lost Lake Float Tube is perfect for anglers looking to get out on the water without having to worry about a boat or kayak. The action was not fast but trolling a black leech pattern on a type III line tempted a couple. Other than a 5 hours drive to the lake, I have to admit that a pontoon boat was the ONLY method of transport needed. The action took place in the deep, clear waters of Laurie Lake in the rolling hills of western Manitoba. Both of us were incredibly tired but also incredibly satisfied… Catching lake trout from a float tube is not that common!Īt the end of October, I actually had the good fortune of experiencing more lake trout on the fly. It was dusk as we were finally packing the gear into Rob’s van and heading home. Boat rides, portages, and gear transfers take a fair bit of time and we also wanted to fish from the rental boat on George Lake. After that, we decided to start heading back. After about a half dozen fish each, we decided it was time for lunch.Īll our fish had been released and lunch was an old-fashioned wiener roast over an open fire. Although topping out at a fairly small size for lake trout – about twenty inches – they hit hard and pulled deep. Float tubes are not built for speed and we could see the boulder-lined shore of our target area getting closer and closer.Īt last! Target area acquired! We used intermediate lines to send baitfish patterns among the boulders and the trout responded. It made me happy that I had lugged in a pair of neoprene waders. According to my portable depth finder, the water temperature was fifty-five degrees. However, Rob had done his homework and knew that the trout staged for spawning along a rocky shore not far from our launch point. Forbes Lake is a couple miles long and about a mile wide – a fairly ambitious size for most float tubers. Rob waited patiently… And only kidded me a couple times about my antiquated equipment.Įventually, we were in the water. Needless to say, it was a long, strenuous process. Mine had an actual inner tube for a bladder and required a bicycle pump for inflation. Rob had his tube inflated and ready to go almost instantly. Forbes Lake came into view relatively quickly and we hastily unpacked our tubes. In this part of Canadian Shield, there are only a few lakes that actually hold lake trout and Forbes was one of them.Īgain, visions of lake trout fueled us across a one mile portage. In another 15 minutes, we had chugged across George Lake and were looking at the portage to our final destination of Forbes Lake. The tubes went into the rental boat and we cranked its small motor to life. With visions of lake trout pulling fly rods out of our hands, that mile may have been the shortest I’ve ever walked. It was about a mile hike to the George Lake rental boat. Our trusty shuttle driver said he would be back at 5 PM and wished us good luck. Once there, we hoisted our tubes onto our backs and pocketed the keys to a rental boat at the other end of the trail. The shuttle boat’s outboard roared to life and we headed 15 minutes down the Winnipeg River to our next destination, which was the portage to George Lake. As the sun came up, we were on the Pointe du Bois dock of George Lake Outfitters, loading our tubes into their shuttle boat. That put us in the heart of the Canadian Shield – evergreen forests, granite outcroppings, and lots of fishable water. After loading the tubes into Rob’s van at about 4 AM, we drove about 2 hours east. We started in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the middle of the prairies. On a sheer effort per fish basis, it was likely one of the most challenging – and complex – trips I’ve ever taken. So when my friend Rob extended an end-of-September invite for some float tube lake trout, I was all over it. A lot of things have to come together to pull a laker up to your tube. They also tend to inhabit very large lakes. They often frequent depths beyond the easy reach of fly tackle. Lake trout are a tough catch for most float tubers.

Players unravel this mystery by watching movie clips, rehearsals, and other pieces of cinematic ephemera from her three fictional films. Immortality is best experienced with only a vague understanding of what you’re in for beyond its central mystery: What happened to the infamous actress Marissa Marcel? Any video games that were released in 2022, updated in 2022, or achieved renewed cultural relevance in 2022 are eligible for this list. Over the past month, the Polygon staff voted, debated, and resigned itself to the series of compromises that is our top 50 games of 2022. Mike Mahardy, Senior Editor, Reviews How the Polygon top 50 list works Until then, these 50 games will more than suffice. As studios splinter, ideas disperse, and developer talent strides off toward new horizons, it’s undeniably apparent that the medium’s best work is still only a seed in some creator’s imagination - and if the pattern holds, it will take a fair number of asterisks, caveats, and parentheticals to describe it. But still: I’m amazed at how many other games have equally strong arguments for that top slot. Sure, a clear winner emerged as Polygon staffers’ votes began to trickle in - a surefire indication of the one game we collectively predict will, looking back from some point in the future, be the video game of 2022. Some of the best games of the last 12 months: a two-button roguelite about the meta strategy of character progression a dungeon-crawler-meets-management-sim about organized religion and echo chambers a dice-based paean to the power of community that’s also a visual-novel lament to the things we lose in pursuit of wealth.įor me, it’s this erasure, reinterpretation, and reinforcement of genres that defines the list below. And in 2022, more so than any other year, I threw up my hands and allowed myself to revel in the chaos. Like any worthy art form, they require constant categorization, re-categorization, and re-re-categorization, just to keep track of every twist and turn in their labyrinthine evolution. Even “Metroidvania,” a portmanteau created specifically to denote a certain set of design tenets, often comes with a cascade of asterisks, caveats, and parentheticals.īut of course, video games’ stubborn refusal to be pinned down is part of what makes them so damn fun. “Turn-based strategy” isn’t doing all that much work anymore. Simple terms like “open world” and “first-person shooter” have lost much of their original meaning. It’s becoming increasingly difficult, as the years go by, to describe my favorite video games. Then I believe the boat was purchased by another doctor in Arkansas, moved there and little progress was made thru about 2012 on the boat. I believe he worked on it for about 5-6 years out in California and got the hull back into ship-shape applying the West no soak on the hull. He brought it home and with a few friends, they replanked the bottom and sides (triple planking on bottom, double planking on sides). While I’m in no great rush to play it again, the appreciation I gleaned for a culture I knew practically nothing about is something I really cherish. Wrap Up: Never Alone's failings don't diminish its importanceĭespite Never Alone’s failings, it’s an effective, important experiment in blending gaming and education for grown-ups and, as such, I find it hard to entirely dismiss. Hearing about a culture is one thing, but the ability to then walk around in that culture, to face enemies and traverse environments informed by that culture’s struggles really helps the information stick. It’s tempting to wish you could divorce Never Alone’s entrancing, beautiful, heartfelt videos from its mediocre game, but you’d be doing them both a disservice. It sounds great, thanks to a sparse score and a mesmerizingly gruff narrator recounting Nuna’s story in the Iñupiat tongue. It looks great, with some lovely animation and stark environments. The game component of Never Alone does have some strengths. Solo play pushes Never Alone from inoffensive to infuriating and frankly should have been omitted entirely. Having a partner doesn’t make Never Alone more engaging or inventive, so the core issues remain, but at least they’ll keep you from wanting to pull your hair out. Solo play pushes Never Alone from inoffensive to infuriating Once my wife took over controlling Nuna, it was infinitely easier to keep the two alive. Towards the end of the game, when the pair find themselves more frequently threatened by enemies, it’s a Sisyphean task to navigate Nuna to safety and then instantly switch to save fox who sits patiently awaiting his death. In many games, Nuna’s cultural heritage would be a helpful way of rounding out her character, but Never Alone injects that cultural identity in every crevice of the world she inhabits and the story in which she plays the starring role. When her village is plagued by blizzards, a young Iñupiat girl named Nuna sets out - with the aid of a helpful white fox - to find their source and, hopefully, put a stop to them. On its surface, Never Alone is a serene, beautifully-rendered platformer in the spirit of Limbo or Braid. But the platformer built to help make this education easier to swallow is a little bitter. The story and heritage developer Upper One Games and publisher E-Line Media is distinct, and its presentation is made with care. Never Alone isn’t a textbook-style interactive CD-ROM, but it enrobes a fascinating cultural survey with a candy coating of game mechanics. But puzzlingly, edutainment has remain mainly the purview of games aimed at kids. From Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? to Oregon Trail, the power of games as teaching tools has been demonstrated countless times through the years.
